Safe Transactions & Meetings
Meet in person and use cash to complete a transaction. Choose a public place to exchange payment and items, like a coffee shop, supermarket, mall, or your local police station's parking lot. Be wary of users who refuse to meet face-to-face, insist on dealing with non-cash methods, or ask you to mail payments.
Essential Rules for In-Person Exchanges:
- Home Meetings: For larger items like furniture requiring home visits, always ensure you have someone else present with you.
- Same-Time Exchange: The best way to complete a purchase is to hand over payment while receiving the item. Never transfer funds or pay in advance.
- Cash Verification: When receiving cash, verify that the bills are authentic and not counterfeit (see uscurrency.gov tips).
Payment Methods to Avoid
Don't use personal, certified, or cashier's checks, and never wire money (e.g., Western Union) to another user as these leave you unprotected. Beware of buyers offering checks above your asking price. If using PayPal, review common PayPal scams to stay protected.
Identifying Fake Listings & Users
Be cautious of deals with unrealistically low prices, stock/catalog photos, or spammy descriptions. If an offer seems too good to be true, it usually is!
Inspecting & Testing Products
Thoroughly inspect the item before paying. Ensure details on condition, price, and payment method are agreed upon beforehand. Test electronics, bikes, or cars to confirm they function properly.
Note on Vehicles & Phones: When buying a vehicle, check its VIN with third-party history tools for theft and damage reports. For mobile phones, check with carrier stores to ensure the device hasn't been blacklisted or reported stolen.
